Want to visit Aude and the City of Carcassonne during your next vacation? With its history as rich as its heritage, it would be a shame to miss out! Proof of this is that the Occitan department boasts, in addition to Carcassonne, no fewer than 10 sites classified among the most beautiful villages in France waiting to be discovered. Take advantage of your stay at the camping near Carcassonne to explore the beauty of the characteristic villages present in Aude.
Less than 10 km from Narbonne, don’t miss a stop at Bages in the Regional Natural Park of Narbonne in the Mediterranean. This small village, home to artisans, fishermen, and winemakers, overlooks the Berre and the lagoons, offering an idyllic setting for visitors. It also stands out for its authenticity and medieval charm, exemplified by its 11th-century sundial and Saint-Martin Church. But the most striking feature of Bages is certainly the panoramic views from the heights of the village, set in a magnificent natural environment.
Heading towards the Eastern Pyrenees, your journey will take you to Cucugnan, a picturesque village located more than 700 meters above sea level. Surrounded by vineyards and nestled just steps from the Château de Queribus, one of the main characteristics of this village is its amphitheater-like construction with its charming narrow streets.
Just 20 minutes from Carcassonne, head off to discover Caunes-Minervois. Characterized by its built heritage, this historic town will appeal to those who love history and old stones. Indeed, take a stroll through its narrow streets where you can discover splendid Renaissance mansions, its ramparts, and its beautiful abbey.
Visiting Caunes-Minervois will also be an opportunity to explore the red marble quarries that were used, among other things, to build the Trianon at Versailles.
South of Carcassonne, your journey through Aude and its most beautiful villages will bring you to Alet-les-Bains.
Let yourself be charmed by this medieval village with half-timbered houses, as well as by the Notre-Dame d'Alet Abbey.
In just 30 minutes from the Camping du Moulin de Sainte-Anne, reach Fanjeaux, once considered an important place during the Cathar period. It is no surprise, then, that you can admire many medieval buildings, such as the former convent of the fisher monks, the Church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, the Seignadou, and more.
Situated at the edge of the Orbieu, Lagrasse is nestled among the vines and hills. Recognizable by its medieval architecture, the village houses an architectural treasure from that same period: its Benedictine abbey.
Not far from Bages, Gruissan combines sea, mountains, and medieval architecture for a surprising stop. Among the must-see sights in Gruissan, my personal favorite is the Barberousse Tower and the beautiful Chalet Beach.
Close to the camping site, head out to discover Montolieu, which translates from Occitan as the “Mountain of Olives.” The village stands out for its position overlooking the gorges of Alzeau, offering incomparable views! In addition to being labeled one of the most beautiful villages in France, Montpellier is also classified as a “village of books and Gothic arts.”
Identifiable by the Magdala Tower located in the domain of Abbé Saunière, Rennes-le-Château still holds many secrets dating back to its Cathar past. To uncover the answers to these mysteries, you will need to explore this village in the Upper Valley of Aude and perhaps find a few clues at the Bérenger Saunière museum...
Finally, the last stop on this journey through Aude will guide you to Termes and its preserved landscapes. Nature lovers will have plenty of opportunities to discover the spectacular Terminet and Coyne Pont gorges. These places are perfect for canyoning and hiking.
